“You & me could write a bad romance.”
New art. Gaga.
She’s a great subject to draw, I’ll say that much. There may be more Gaga-isms on the way.

“Telling tall tales of Victorian sadness…”
Artist of the month: Colette Calascione.

Colette Calascione was born in San Francisco in 1971 and received her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. She resides in New York. I adore her style. Its like a combination between old school Victorian portraits and sci-fi, like Ray Caesar (who’ll be featured himself one of these days). She’s definitely one of my favorites. I don’t even want to say anything, I just want you to look at her work and appreciate it.

Her paintings remind me of old photographs like this:

If you want to see more of her work, find out more about her or friend her on MySpace, here are some links:

Sylvia Ji’s artwork is breathtaking.
Sylvia is another artist (like Will Cotton, who I mentioned in a previous post), the kind of which I can only dream of being. She paints on wood, and you can often see the wood through the paint, giving the painting a unique texture. Her subjects are women, often with high hairdos reminiscent of 17th-century wigs, and often including snakes, roses or even arrows, depending on the feel and emotion of the painting. Her figures are model-like and curvaceous and yet at times in dark and perhaps “grotesque” (i.e. spiders and moths crawling on hair or bodies) settings. As it says on her website:
“Some of her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows, or just nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting or decaying beauty.“
She does amazing paintings of women’s faces painted with Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) make-up, and these are my favorites of her paintings. I have a sort of obsession with all things sugar skull and Day of the Dead related so that explains it.

While my favorite works of hers are her Dia de Los Muertos skull-women, the following pieces are insanely gorgeous and are favorites as as well:

Jem!

Wormwood

Lovestruck

Nereid

Marionette
I highly suggest you look at her website and get familiar with her, because I think she’s going to be huge someday.

Paradise Lost, 2007
Will Cotton has been a favorite painter of mine ever since Jay turned me on to him in 2004 or so (he worked at the time for a woman named Mary Boone who owned an art gallery that Will Cotton showed at). Not only is he practically photo-realistic in his depictions, but the colors he uses are just divine. Hes the kind of artist that I can only dream of being. To me, a good artist is someone who makes you not just think, but get excited over the work. And Will Cotton definitely does that for me.

Candy Curls, 2005
When I first started following his work he used way less models than he does now. I must say I like the juxtaposition of the females with the candy, it reminds me of the Sofia Coppola movie ‘Marie Antoinette‘ when her and her ladies-in-waiting are eating all those candies and pastries and trying on clothes. Specifically the painting above, and the ones below.

Rachel, 2006

Ribbon Candy, 2008
As someone who runs a website called Cupcake Rehab, I’m sure you can see and understand why I love these pieces. I wish he’d do a cupcake painting for me! He typically paints in oil on linen, and his sketches/drawings are also available for viewing on his website, along with a new sculpture that is also fantastic. I encourage you to check out his site, you’ll be amazed at his work and he’ll soon become one of your favorite artists.
These are a few (more) of my favorite paintings by Will:

Chalet, 2003

Chocolate Bath, 2002

Root Beer Swamp, 2002

Nuthouse, 2007

Chocolate Wave, 2002
Insatiable, 2008
